About the City
Gerardmer is a town in north-east of France, in the Lorraine region, the capital of Canton Vosges department in the arrondissement of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. Its population of 8845 inhabitants makes it the third largest town in the department. It owes its nickname of "Pearl of the Vosges" to Alfred Hugo, Victor Hugo’s brother.
Gerardmer is located lakeside at an average altitude of 670 m. Deriving from the Wurm glaciations, Lake Gerardmer is restrained by a terminal moraine permanently blocking the valley downstream. It empties into the Vologne by Jamagne. The lowest altitude of the town, 584 m, sees the Vologne flowing toward Granges. Its highest point is Grouvelin Head which culminates at 1 137 m and overlooks Lake Lispach of La Bresse. The municipality is comprised of large wooded areas, totaling 3 721 hectares of coniferous forest.
